Battlestar’s Finale was Frakkin’ Awesome
Friday’s two hour plus finale was amazing. It wasn’t what I thought it would be, and it wasn’t perfect, but it was the best finale for a series that I have seen in a long time, especially since NBC has a habit of cutting shows before they get to the series finale.
I am sure a lot of people will be pissed, especially Pandagon’s Amanda Marcotte. Starbuck it turns out is not a half-cylon Wonder Woman who single-handedly saves everyone in the fleet because she is the chosen one. Marcotte will also probably be angry and rail out because the ending has some intelligent design overtones in that the planet they finally settle on miraculously had evolved human life according to God’s plan. (Just don’t call it god, it doesn’t like that which I found hilarious and a good poke at organised religion.)
And a lot of revelations were small or not there. The music was simple a sound representation of the jump coordinates for our earth and not a hidden meaning for life. But then again I love the Asian retro rock version of All Along the Watchtower so anytime it gets put in the show is amazing.
And of course I just love it when Cavil freaks at the end of the Humn Cylon battle and blows his own brains out. While I am a pacifist, it was humorous and satisfying for that evil bastard to have to kill himself at the end because he can’t face what he has brought upon himself.
Now all I can do is wait for The Plan, Caprica, and hope that the next Stargate show doesn’t frakkin blow. Damn I am gonna miss BSG.
Update 3/24/09:
The post was rather short since I went out and celebrated that night with some Leinenkugel’s so I am going to add more substance.
I liked the siege of the Cylon colony but didn’t love it. For the action part of the finale it wasn’t that actiony. The Cylons got to do more cool action scene stuff than the main characters and the space battle between the Vipers and the Raiders was almost nonexistent. Plus the slugfest between the batteries of the two sides was too drawn back. For all of Galactica’s documentary style, we never ever saw the point of view from in a turret the entire series!
Also there wasn’t much closure for the ‘bad’ cylons. They just kinda died. The only meaninful ending for any of them seemed to be the Cavil suicide. These people have been in the series since the beginning for some of them and some of the models didn’t even have any lines. Kind of a cop-out if you ask me.
The character endings were amazing if a little slowly paced. It was good to see how the characters were going to settle down at the end, but sometimes it felt a little drug out to me, while they skipped over issues like how in the hell the entire fleet was convinced to give up all of their technology without throwing a hissy fit. Lee’s answer about a clean slate is just too easy, for a show that never likes easy solutions.
All in all, though like I said in teh first part of the post, the show and the finale were frakking amazing and I will miss this show and can’t wait till the DVD comes out so I can watch it over and over again.
